Its rare when anything comes out nowadays that when there is a “Limited Edition” that it really is limited. This has been a marketing ploy for the last few years when it comes to games and DVDs. DVDs are the worst offenders of this, with just about every single movie that is release its always coined as special or limited but its really just the regular intended DVD. Once you drop the cash to get that “special edition” and own it for a good while at times studios actually do end up releasing a REAL special edition that actually has special features in it and is really worth getting. Usually its also cheaper than you paid for your gimped version. That always pisses me off.
There are some times it is done right. Take for example the collectors edition for both the original release of World of Warcraft and the expansion The Burning Crusade. I was a little late to the Warcraft party I didn’t start playing till about a year ago. So for me trying to get The Burning Crusade Collectors Edition was exciting, why? Cause at release it was almost impossible to even get a pre-order. At my EB they only were getting one (which the guy who bought it was stoned out of his mind when he was there and barely noticed he got the CE). It made me just a little envious of this guy, cause I tend to enjoy getting the best and highest edition of anything usually (depending on if its worth it).
When the announcement for the Legendary Halo 3 set was announce I was stoked. One real selling point for me is when it comes with DVDs of making of. I eat that stuff up if anything comes with a actual in depth making of im sold easy. Then on top of that it was said that it was also going to be Limited to a few hundred thousand. Soon as i heard that news I ran out to my EB put my money down. Boom #1 and hopefully the only 1 just like with the Burning Crusade, As months past i was still the only person that had it so I had a feeling I was going to be the only one. Even after that announced the price was raised to $130 I didn’t care I was willing to pay to have the extra content and to be “one of the few”.
Few weeks later I went over to EB to pick something up and as I did, I asked just how many legendary pre-orders there were and the guy looks at me and says “eh this looks like around 40″. Man i was pissed, cause that was a clear given that it was not going to be limited and just about every EB was going to have this many or more, tons of them all over best buy and any where that sells video games. Then you have to realize yes its a smart business move. Tons of people will buy this and Bungie will rake in tons of cash, who wouldn’t do that its a smart move. Why not other companies are pulling in tons of cash.
I really hope at some point in time a movie or a game will actually have a SKU that is actually Limited and or Special. One day this will be something to enjoy without hopefully dropping over $200 on anything. Lets just hope!!!
EDIT : Something that just came to mind when I posted this. This DVD came out very pricey for the speical Two Disk set, Then a few months down the road I was at best buy as saw the NEW “Special Edition”. Let lone $40 come on, this had should have been released from the get go not an after thought. Fuckers
